How To Improve Your Grammar Skills

Updated: May 4, 2020

What exactly is grammar? Grammar is the system that structures a language in a specific way. Although it can be confusing and complicated at times, the correct grammar is extremely important for your writing and success!

Here are 5 ways to improve your grammar skills: 1. Familiarize yourself with the parts of speech

These are the types of words that make up the language. They are nouns, adjectives, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, interjections, and occasionally articles. By knowing the different parts of speech, it will be easier for you to understand how they function in sentences. 2. Recognize points of view

The English language has three points of view, and each of those can be either singular or plural. The points of view are: singular or plural first-person, singular or plural second-person, and singular or plural third-person.

In a first-person point of view, the following pronouns can be used: "I," "we," "me," "us," "my," "mine," or "ours".

In a second-person point of view, the following pronouns can be used: "you," "your," or "yours".

In a third-person point of view, the following pronouns can be used: "he," she," "it," "they," "him," "hers," "them," "their", "his," "its," or "theirs". 3. Read a variety of material, including children’s books

Reading is most like the best way for you to improve your grammar skills, because when you read, you reinforce correct grammar in your mind while also learning how other authors use language. The reason we recommend reading children’s books is because these books are intended to teach the basics of language. This includes fundamental words and spelling, regular and irregular nouns and verbs, simple conjugation, and sentence structure. We also suggest that you read out loud, since the combination of seeing, saying, and hearing assists in solidifying what you have learned.

4. Pay attention to how other speakers talk

When native speakers, instructors, or tutors give you feedback, listen to them! Listen to how they construct sentences, where they place words in sentences, and the vocabulary they use

5. Practice writing

Similar to reading, you can also improve your grammar by writing and practicing any new rules or words you've learned. The more you practice, the better you get. Students of any age can benefit from taking extra steps to improve their grammar. Apart from using the above methods, we also highly recommend the grammar course by ECourses4You.

This in-depth course provides a thorough analysis of English grammar for Intermediate to Advanced English students. In the duration of the course you will learn about all tenses, the use of modals, the adjective clause, the noun clause, the adverb clause, phrases, count and non-count nouns and some English terms.
