Estimating Answers to Calculations
Even though a calculator can perform many calculations fast and efficiently, an estimate for an answer might be a valuable check. This is accomplished by rounding each of the integers so that the calculation becomes relatively simple.
Examples:
a) Make an educated guess about the solution to 57 × 246.
There are two options:
i. 50 × 250 = 12 500
ii. 60 × 200 = 12 000
b) Calculate the solution to 6386 × 27.
6000 × 30 = 200.
